Confessions of a recovering sexist...

This diary isn't really political so much as it is confessional.  Throughout this election season I have been a supporter of Obama and to varying degrees a detractor of Clinton.  I have been very concerned about racism in the media, but concerned about sexism to a lesser degree.  It seemed to me that it was prevalent but it seemed so petty that I didn't take it very seriously.  I couldn't figure out how wife jokes were really as damaging as black jokes.  I was wrong.  Here is the story of my "awakening" (to borrow the title of a feminist novel...appropriate I think).

It's only scary when a Black man says it...

Get ready.

We've begun to see what the rethugs are rolling out for the GE and it's no great surprise.

My mother the Obama supporter

I stopped by my parents house today to drop something off and somehow or another Obama came up.  What my mother said about his nomination and victory speech really surprised me.

Graphs: Actual Votes per Delegate in 1992

I was inspired earlier today to consider the implication that a disproportion between votes cast and delegates earned was unfair.  So I investigated.  What I found when looking into Bill Clinton's win in 1992 was interesting.

UPDATED: Guess who said this recently...(w/ Poll...)

Here is a quote from a Hillary supporter that sums up well the line of arguments we read on MYDD regularly.  I don't think I could sum up Hillary's arguments any better.  If this quote was a diary, in fact, I'd be it would get rec'd.  So, let's see if you can guess who said this...

"I continue to marvel at this. Obama has lost five of the last seven primaries. He has won two major primaries since February 22nd, Oregon and North Carolina. He has not won enough delegates to be the nominee. But that hasn't stopped the media from reporting these false accomplishments that are fed to them by the Obama campaign, such as Obama now has a majority of the delegates. Well, big whoop. A majority of the delegates doesn't mean anything, so they keep changing the scenario; they keep changing the narrative. Obama was crushed in Kentucky. He is doing worse in key demographics than ever before, and they report the night as a big win for him."

The Origins of Political Phrases

I was thinking - I use phrases in my political conversations that I don't totally understand.  I know the current meaning for them, but I don't know where they came from or how they became so iconic.  Behind the fold is a list of phrases.  If you know what they are or where they come from, please respond.  Also, add phrases you don't get.  Let's have a nice, relaxing, non-contentious thread.

About that new kind of politics... (w/poll)

I just read this this morning.  It is incredibly refreshing.  Obama isn't the perfect candidate, and he certainly hasn't avoided all of the pitfalls of negative campaigning, but he is definitely a DIFFERENT kind of politician.  Story behind the fold...

Oh, in case you forgot (w/poll)

In an Oval Office interview with Politico and Yahoo News -- Bush's first for an online audience -- the president said his doomsday scenario for a premature withdrawal "of course is that extremists throughout the Middle East would be emboldened, which would eventually lead to another attack on the United States."

That's what we're up against. Bush is back to "Vote for a Dem and you will die." Eight years of that garbage was enough don't you think? Please, for the world's sake, can we make up and play nice?
