About that new kind of politics... (w/poll)

I just read this this morning.  It is incredibly refreshing.  Obama isn't the perfect candidate, and he certainly hasn't avoided all of the pitfalls of negative campaigning, but he is definitely a DIFFERENT kind of politician.  Story behind the fold...

Obama, while campaigning in Michigan was asked a question by a female reporter.  Too busy to answer at the moment, Obama replied, "Hold on, sweetie."  (Cringe, right?)  It gets worse.  He never did actually answer her question.  But then it gets better.

Apparently, without provocation, Obama realized his mistake and called the reporter.  He apologized both for calling her "sweetie" and for not answering the question.  Here is what he reportedly said.

"That's a bad habit of mine," Obama said in the message. "I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front

"Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next," he added.

WHat a refreshing candidate!  Admitting his mistakes, personally acting on them, and seeking to make amends by offering later access.  We haven't seen that kind of personal responsibility from a presidential candidate at least since I've been paying attention to politics (late 90's and on).

My hunch is that Bush probably just would have done his dumb Bush chuckle afterward and then done something extra frat-guy-like.  What do you think Bush would have done after calling a reporter sweetie?

Poll
After calling a reporter "sweetie" and ignoring her, Bush would have...
told her that if she complains, she is emboldening the terrorists
smacked her on the butt
high five'd Dick Cheney
just chuckled uncontrollably

I know a waitress who has this same problem.  Every other word out of her mouth is "sweetie."

Well if "cover up" was his goal, he failed.  That came from the front page of CNN.  I think he just knew a mistake when he made it.  But I understand that you aren't used to that kind of politics.  It is new afterall.  :D

Many people are going to be disappointed if they think he will bring a new kind of politics to Washington.

They certainly will (none / 0)

But if Obama lead the political discourse to a place that's even marginally less stupid than where it is now, that will be good progress.

Unless its your candidate? (none / 0)

Then its learning from your mistakes, or being mature enough to admit you were wrong?

People like you will hate him for apologizing, and hate him for not apologizing.

I have that readiness.

I dunno... maybe it's me, but I am much more up in arms with Bush comparing Obama and Democrats to Nazi appeasers than someone being called sweetie and then getting an apology....  maybe it's because I used o be a waitress and the first comment in the thread was spot on...

IN the larger picture (none / 0)

is this what really matters?

This is a dumb story, and it gets all this attention.

All I can say, is that if I hadn't gotten any sleep since October, '07 I don't think I would be polite to anyone.

Glad you are point out the glaring character flaw, of using the word 'sweetie'. That's horrible.

Glad that after you pointed it out that condesending candidate made the effort to 'pretend' to do the right thing.

I am sure he didn't mean it, either time.

Sorry that BO is tired. Maybe Bush was right... it`s hard work. If BO is not up for the task, then maybe he should stay home and practice his bowling.

Oh c'mon (none / 0)

both candidates are sleep-deprived.  Clinton herself has explicitly blamed regrettable statements on sleep deprivation.

More sexism from Obama.

Nice.

Re: About that new kind of politics... (w/poll) (none / 0)

Women can say 'sweetie'.

Blacks can say 'n____r'

Gays can say 'f_g'

This is the identity driven politics you've created, get used to it.

Obama is a sexist.

I created something that has existed for as long as American politics has existed?  You are incompetant.
